WHO - World Health Organisation

The WHO Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI) is part of the Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health cluster at WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

The WHO Tobacco Free Initiative is looking to work with governments, public and private sectors to develop a series of cost-effective, scalable and sustainable projects that will have population-wide impacts, to help countries advance their tobacco control work. The TFI website contains more information about the TFI and material for download. Please visit their website for more information 'http://www.who.int/tobacco/mhealth/en/index.html. You can also download a brochure here.

The MovingLife project identifies promising online and mobile solutions related to tobacco cessation and other aspects of the fight against tobacco. Initially we also identifies good on-line solutions that are not specifically aimed for mobile technologies, but have the potential for going completely mobile.

Below is a list of projects that have been identified by the MovingLIfe project:
  • xhale.dk.dk (in Danish) is a Danish cessation site targeting teenagers and promoted by the Danish Cancer Society. The site manages the user's cessation programme and sends reminders via sms. It also contains information and advise and offers a chat room for discussions. xhale.dk can be reached via smartphones with internet access. A dedicated mobile application is planned for release before the end of 2012.

  • The Danish Cancer Society also offers a free SMS service to help adults quit smoking. The service offers encouraging SMS messages on a daily basis http://www.cancer.dk/forebyg/roegfri/saadan/SMS_service.htm and www.ddsp (in Danish).

  • STOMP is a text messaging smoking cessation intervention service available as a free national service in New Zealand (called txt2quit) and run by The Quit Group.

  • A UK version TEXT2STOP was adapted from the STOMP programme especially for the United Kingdom. The service delivers text messages via a scheduling software and an online gateway to participants. A study was published in The Lancet (The Lancet, Volume 378, Issue 9785, Pages 49 - 55, 2 July 2011) demonstrated a doubling of quit rates over a control group at six months.

If you are involved in smoking related activities and would like to make WHO aware of your solution, please contact Technical Officer Mr. Sameer Pujari, WHO, Geneva pujaris@who.int with a copy to the MovingLife project at webmaster@moving-life.in-jet.eu
